BE BRAVE NOT PERFECT

Maths

The sequencing of our teaching of mathematics is supported by the White Rose Maths long term plans. These plans have crafted learning in each year group to ensure new learning is built upon strong foundations whilst allowing for the necessary revisiting of key skills throughout.

Can You Still?

Every day, the children complete a 'Can You Still?' task which will involve ten questions: arithmetic questions to ensure fluency of calculation, previous unit questions to ensure new learning is committed to memory and shape, space and measures questions to ensure these skills are revisited regularly. This also allows another opportunity for teachers to assess children's understanding and teach accordingly. Each Friday, the 'Can You Still?' session is replaced with a 'gap fill' prolonged session.

We recognise how fundamental times table recall speed is to later success in maths lessons. We use Times Table Rockstars to support with the rapid recall of these essential facts.

The online app has great features: incorrect answers are always immediately corrected in front of the pupil so that they start to associate the correct answer to every question. More than that, the clever code behind the scenes works out which times tables facts each pupil is consistently taking longer to answer and then it gradually starts to present these facts more frequently until pupils have mastered them. It will also ask related division questions 20% of the time in order to reinforce division facts. All children have their own login to practise every day at home. We also build time into the school day for our rock battles!
