At Stanbridge, we believe that reading is central to our ability to understand, interpret and communicate with each other and the world around us. We understand that it ignites creativity, sparks curiosity, and stimulates the imagination in young children and adults alike. The ability to read is fundamental to pupils’ development as independent learners, during their time at school and beyond. As success in reading has a direct effect on progress in all areas of the curriculum, it is given a high priority in our school.
Children follow the same format of lessons across Reception and Key stage 1.
Daily sessions of Read Write Inc phonics take place in EYFS and Year 1 for all children.
In years 2-6 we have a skills based approach to reading. The key skills that are taught are vocabulary, explanation, retrieval, inference, summary and prediction.
We teach these skills through a daily, whole class, guided reading session where the children are given a clear structure to work within. Teaching sequences can be adapted however depending on the needs of our pupils.
Why is this right for children at Stanbridge?
It is essential that our approach to reading supports our philosophy of our school and supports our drive to create ambitious and brave pupils who love to read. We want this to stay with them after they leave Stanbridge. By prioritising reading our children, know more, remember more and understand more!
We will know our approach has been successful through analysing data, hearing children read and discussing their understanding of a variety of texts.
